Changing the record

(Mario)

A shop full of records, posters and passion.

It all started with a simple information: the owners of Disco Oldies, the oldest records store in Valencia (and one of the oldest in Spain), want to retire. Mario is a music lover who is getting tired of his job as a salesman in a shoe store, which he has been doing for 10 years. He’s been a client of the store for a long time. He speaks about it to the drummer of his band CALIVVLA, who is pretty much in the same situation as him.

A third friend goes to the store and talks with the owners. A price is given. It's not cheap, but as Mario says, "I asked the bank, the bank said yes, and now we're here ». As simple as that, the former owners found their buyers. They are from Valencia but more importantly, they are passionated. There was also a proposal from Dutch businessmen who wanted to buy the records stock, but in the end it’s the music that won. Between the first discussion and the keys being handed over, only three months have passed.

That was at the end of 2021. One year later, the store is doing great, and so are Mario and his friends. So they decided to organize a small rock festival, family and without pretension. Thus, 300 lucky people had the chance to see Bluboi, Lucia Gea, Futuro Terror, Margarita Quebrada and many others perform at the first edition of the Disco Oldies festival.

All groups performing during the event are friends, so is the audience. They celebrate Valencia, its rock scene, but above all the pleasure of meeting around a music that they all love. There are pogos, hugs, sweat on t-shirts and beer on shoes. There is also Mario, of course. Sometimes in the public, sometimes on stage because CALIVVLA is part of the line-up. Life is well made sometimes.

If it doesn't look good on a t-shirt, then it's not a proper festival poster.

Two business owners.

If I am able to talk about this event with such details, it is because I was lucky enough to get a ticket thanks to a friend. I say lucky because the tickets could only be bought in person, directly at the store. They sold out so quickly that Mario found himself receiving 50 messages a day about the event as it approached. According to him, "It was a good idea but for the next edition (they will) do it differently, in order to preserve (his) mental heath".

No news yet about this second edition, except the certainty that it will take place. And that I will be there.
